The naturalization interview is a major step in the citizenship process. If you’re seeking to become a U.S. citizen, it is vital to understand precisely what you will need to know for the interview. Our Orange County immigration attorneys have put together a list of what you need to know for your citizenship interview.

Naturalization Interview

During a naturalization interview, a USCIS officer will ask you questions about your application and background. They will also ask you to take an English and civics test. The English test will be made up of three components, including reading, writing, and speaking. The civics test will cover important information you should know about U.S. history and government.

  • Speaking test: A USCIS officer will determine your ability to speak English during your eligibility interview.
  • Reading test: For your reading test, you will need to read aloud one out of three sentences correctly to demonstrate that you can read English. The USCIS provides a reading test vocabulary list to help people study for the reading portion. The content will also focus on U.S. history and civics.
  • Writing test: You will need to write one of three sentences provided correctly to prove that you can write in English.
  • Civics test: You will also need to take a civics test, and you will be asked 10 out of 100 possible questions. You need to answer 6 of the 10 questions correctly to pass the civics test.
